Letterpress—Documenting People, Processes, and Stories of a Historic Medium
This project will conduct primary research through studio visits and interviews of current independent print shops to record interviews and photograph materials and processes in use. Information gathered will be compiled into a written narrative that solidifies the current state of letterpress as told by those who print.
The dissemination of this information through book format will provide the letterpress community with a well-curated resource of information focused on the terminology of tools and processes used in letterpress. More so, the book will outline and record important first-hand accounts of interactions and experiences with this medium—documenting a community of makers at this moment in time. The grant funding period is for one year.
This Scholarship and Creativity Grant proposal was competitively awarded through Montana State University in November of 2022 and provides $15,925 worth of funding to help achieve the outlined goals.
- Advertisement of project through surveys and conference presentations to build up participants in the book
- Recording of first-hand accounts of interactions and experiences of letterpress across the country
- Establishing merit and providing a culturally significant narrative through documentation of oral histories
